What does "Full Song" mean? After all, it could take 5 minutes to record a song, and it could take 5 months. What gives?
I used to charge by the hour, but I kept running into situations where bands would not want to experiment with new ideas or layer tracks because the clock was running. I got tired of that conflict of interest really quickly, so now I charge by the song. It means that you can feel more free to take some time to try cool ideas in the studio, and add that choir of background vocals you wanted, without paying out the wazoo for it. Generally, when the band and I agree that a song is done, it's done.
I've also been in the mind-numbing position of listening to a guitarist try to nail a part for five hours straight. This is not a fun situation, for anyone. Most bands in this situation get tired of hearing the same bit of the song over and over and we finish up as quickly as we can. But I do reserve the right to push songs toward completion if I feel like that's necessary. I've never had to do that, but I'm trying to gaurd against earning an effective hourly rate on a song that starts to look like zero.
