I'll admit that not everything sold in T.J.'s is fished sustainably. I asked at Whole Foods, at not everything they sell is Marine Council Certified either (though they claim to have their own guidelines for sustainable sourcing). But in my experience at grocery stores like Kroger and Harris Teeter, almost NOTHING meets the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Best Choice or Good Alternative lists. If you can even get them to tell you where/how it was raised or caught in the first place. I saw they were selling wild caught Mussels at Kroger the other day - Mussels, which are ecologically a net plus when farmed (since bivalves are filter feeders - putting a bunch of these together actually REDUCES waste in the water rather than adding to it) and have to tear up the bottom of the ocean when wild caught. There is no reason not to farm these things.

My Trader Joes pretty much always has Alaskan wild salmon and Pacific cod in stock, both of which are either a "Best Choice" or a "Good Alternative," and easy to turn into healthy yummy. And they label their products more or less adequately.

I think I will edit my post to clarify that you can't buy without thinking from practically any store, including Trader Joes, but that if you follow the M.B.A. guidelines, you can find seafood at TJs you won't feel guilty consuming.

Have to disagree with Matty on the Trader Joe's part on this. If you are wanting to know more about which stores are being sustainable in their fishing aisle I recommend checking out this page http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/campaigns/oceans/seafood
