Song-A-Week 2: The Right Thing

Tonight was laundry night, so that pretty much guaranteed that there would be NO production on whatever song I managed to squeek out. This week’s song was recorded on my cruddy laptop microphone in Audacity and, as a result, may be bad-sounding, quiet, and generally sloppy. But you’ll get the idea of what the song is at least, which is really the whole point of the song-a-week exercise anyway.
The Right Thing
Copyright 2007 Matthew C Good
I don’t agree
about doing the nice thing
That doesn’t mean
you’re doing the right thing
Cuz some people need
lightening in their eyes
before they can feel
the flood water rise
Some of us need
to make a something
Some of us don’t
and that is fine.
But all of us need
to examine the line
between what we need
and what we can sacrifice

Another short and sweet one there. I think its kinda neat though… Could have a good pulsating/driving feel, add some piano/rhodes and open chords or something…. Let me know what you think.

    It’s okay.
I don’t like going up to the 4 on the end of sacrifice though. You’ve done that before. I think the melody should just end on the 1 like the other stanzas. Or, maybe have a harmony do the 4 if you still want to keep it. Or, maybe have a little trill coming back down from the 4 (like 6, 5, 4, 3, 1 or something) on “yeah” if you REALLY want to keep the 4.
I like the sound of the laptop mic on the acoustic, and the voice even. I also kind of like the computer noise. Try to work something out to get that into tempo maybe?
Good falsetto use and performance too.

i really like this one. i agree with chase that the sound of the computer mic or computer noise in general would sound cool as a rhythmic device. i would stay away from the driving stuff and maybe add some quirky alternative instruments and percussion. pots and pans, maybe a recorder or something like that…page france type stuff. i’d also maybe play a little bit more aggressive on the acoustic emphasizing the base notes from time to time.

this song makes me feel like we are having a little rambling chat, kicking rocks down a dirt road with our hands deep in our pockets, fixing the worlds problems.
    i like it.
