Well, I’ve been a bit down lately. And thinking about my own mortality more than usual. It’s weird for me. School for me was a brilliant way of putting that sort of thinking off… Now the future is not so nicely laid out, and the few things in the future that ARE certain (or nearly so) are fairly depressing. Anyway, for your enjoyment, here are but a few of my insecurities.
Maybe Not
(C) 2007 Matthew C Good
The only cure for life
is death
and everything in between
is a bandage.
Everyone will draw
that breath,
and one day they will forget to take
another.
The only thing that scares
me more
than shutting down is being around
forever.
I think I’ll feel trapped
and bored.
When I stop to think, it makes me
shudder.
Lately I been thinking
impossible thoughts,
asking heavy questions
where nobody talks.
Maybe if I’m lucky,
it’s a long way off.
Maybe I’ll be lucky,
maybe not.
The Midwest plains pass by
slow
Other lives hide behind
the horizon
So the only thing I wanna
know
is why God made the landscape long
but the living short
Lately I been thinking
impossible thoughts,
asking heavy questions
where nobody talks.
Maybe if I’m lucky,
it’s a long way off.
Maybe I’ll be lucky,
maybe not.

I apologize in advance for the last chords. I changed them while I was playing electric and didn’t bother to replay the acoustic, so there’s a bit of a clash there. If I record this song “for real” whatever that means then I’ll fix it.
What do you think? I like the lyrics and the song is alright. My 12-string playing aint *that* bad either.

i really like the feel of this song although i think it needs some more instrumentation. some really “old-time radio” strings in the background maybe a synth there too. just some stuff to compliment the melody. i like the 12 string part in there too. oh…and i don’t think it should have drums. just a kick all verbed up and down in the mix…nothing spectacular. i’m thinking of a sound along the lines of azure ray’s first cd.
i think that the lyrics also do a great job of conveying the feeling of asking impossible questions while you’re really bored. i like it.
What about an accordion? I like the old-radio strings idea.
An accordion would be good. I like this song. It’s poppy, which is kind of funny considering the subject matter of the lyrics.
I don’t think I like the no percussion idea. Maybe some alternative percussion would be good. I feel like something still needs to keep the tempo going. Perhaps just some muted strumming or something different.
This song makes me think of Duncan Sheik a bit. Maybe ’cause it’s more pop-song format. I also like that it’s not too long. Ideal length, makes me want to listen to it again.
I agree that it needs something to keep the tempo going, not sure what but it is your job to figure it out. I like this song.
